John, Get a Close Up of This!

When I was a kid, I had an imaginary friend named John, who was a camera man. He would follow me everywhere, and when something interesting happened, I would say, "John! Get a close up of this!" much to the amusement of my parents, aunts, uncles... I called him John the Close Up Man.

I was so weird.

Yeah, was. Ahem.

Anyway, I find myself wishing, lately, that I had a close up man following us wherever we go. I have had some seriously cute conversations with Mary Grace lately, that I would love to be able to watch over and over again as she grows up. That's why I love this blog - it allows me to record and remember things that I would never be able to remember otherwise, and to share them with you.

We were on our way to get Allison the other day, when the following conversation took place:

MG: Mommy, will you stay at home for a big time?
Amy: No, honey, I have to go to work and help Daddy, but I'm going to pick you up early and we're going to go to Grammaland to see Mimi and Gramma and Uncle Chuck and Uncle Trey...
MG: Mommy, why does Gramma have Uncle Chuck?
Amy: Well, honey, Gramma is Uncle Chuck's Mommy. Just like you and Claire are both my kids, Uncle Chuck and Mimi and Mommy are all Gramma's kids. He's her son, and he's my brother, and that makes him your uncle. Does that make sense?
MG: Yes, Mommy, that makes a lot of sense for me.

Amy: When you grow up and have kids, Claire will be their aunt. And when Claire grows up and has kids, you will be their aunt.
MG: Wow! That's really cool!

How cute is she? I mean, seriously.

Claire has been talking up a storm, too. Whenever someone comes in the room, she's all "HI!!!" She'll say their name, if she can. And she'll practice different intonations, so we'll hear a musical series of "Hi Daddy!" It's just not typeable.

Which is why I need John the Close Up Man.

Edited to add: Mom informed me this weekend that John the Close Up Man only did still photography, no video. I told Mom that I'm pretty sure that John has upgraded his equipment in the last 30 years, and probably has a Flip by now.

It's really extraordinarily heart warming. The welcome I get from the kids and Amy when I get home is the brightest spot on even outstanding days at work. Everybody should be so blessed.

Amelia seems to enjoy making her daddy melt, too.

I've figured out why kids her age are the way they are - they have all the personality and character of an adult, packed into this itty-bitty package. It's really too much personality for someone who's still less than three feet tall, so it comes out in odd ways.

And how smart is MG asking why gramma has an Uncle Chuck!! Haven't we all wondered that same thing? (grin)

Because AWWWWW isn't really typeable either.

Are you weird because you had an imaginary friend or weird because he was a grown man with a video camera following you around. Hmmm, probably a good thing you have a blog.

If you locate 'John' and he's interested in a side job pass along my number.

I love the questions the kids come up with sometimes. Makes me giggle!
